Hollow Realization, Fatal Bullet, and Alicization Lycoris are all fairly solid B-tier titles, however. All three games have a bit of fanservice in their side content as well, if that's an issue for you. Lost Song and Accel World vs Sword Art Online have some unique mechanics (flying!), but they're overall kinda mediocre too with fairly low budgets. The Hollow Fragment content is good, however, if a bit repetitive. Hollow Fragment is an updated version of the Japanese only Infinity Moment, which was a PSP game that took a lot of inspiration from FFXI and shows it's age real quick.

The earlier ones are pretty hit and miss. There's a demo of Chapter 1 on all the consoles, although it's not the best representation of Chapter 2 onward, it is a good chunk of the game (10-20 hours) and a way to see if you'll like it. Sure, they'll provide a recap, but it's not quite the same as playing it. Plus, if you intend to play this game, you'll need to play Lycoris to see the first half of the story. The world is fun to explore, and the Sacred Arts are a unique take on magic even if they can be janky at times.

The combat system is legitimately a lot of fun when it works too, and you'll feel utterly awesome when you successfully land those hard hitting Sword Arts. You can control anyone besides Kirito, and everyone gets a lot of screen time in side events. In some ways it's a better adaptation than the anime thanks to the details included. it's also a fairly enjoyable run through the first half of the Alicizaiton storyline. Plus, the developers were basically forced to include that harem bullshit, despite the story repeating over and over that Kirito and Asuna are the official couple and they have no eyes for anyone else.īut. Character animations are a bit sterile outside of major cutscenes, and the story is all over the place at times despite a likable original character. The gameplay balance ends up all over the place, and some of the systems are obtuse as heck and not easily explained. Some of the later chapters and DLC have a bit of padding to justify their length.

It's a janky game with control issues that makes you wish it was better.
